SUMMARY OF ROMEO AND JULIET
Long ago in Verona, Italy, lived two famous families, the Montagues and the Capulets. These two houses were deadly enemies, and their hatred for each other didn’t stop at foul words, but extended to bloody duels and even sometimes death.
Romeo, son of old Montague, had thought that he was in love with Rosaline, a beautiful girl who unfortunately didn’t love him back. When he heard that Rosaline was to attend a great party at the Capulets, he along with one of his trusted companions Mercutio, donned masks and entered the great hall as invited guests. But Romeo didn’t get very far in the ballroom when he spotted the divine beauty of Juliet, the daughter of Capulet, and forgot his disdainful Rosaline. Since Romeo had never seen Juliet before, he asked for her name, but raised the suspicion of another man, Tybalt, who happened to be a fiery member of the Capulet clan. Tybalt challenged him with his sword, but Capulet, seeing the two men, parted them, and requested that there will be no bloodshed at his party. Tybalt however was angered at the fact that a Montague should take part in a Capulet festival and held a grudge against him since then.
Romeo spoke to Juliet and asked to kiss her on her hand; she was flattered that this complete stranger was showing her much affection, so she agreed. He then asked her if he could kiss her on her lips and pressed himself on her until they were broken up by Juliet’s nurse who had to bring Juliet to her mother. Romeo, found out later that night that Juliet was a Capulet and was stunned because that certainly meant death for him. Romeo couldn’t let her go because he and Juliet fell in love with each other. Juliet loved a Montague, the son of a hated house.
That night, Romeo, too stunned by the fact that he was in love with Juliet, a Capulet, couldn’t sleep that night and strolled over to her and stood by the balcony that led to her room. He came across Juliet on her balcony thinking to herself out loud and wished that he wasn’t a Montague. He couldn’t stay quiet forever so he spoke to her. She was embarrassed that he heard her confessions about him, but admitted her passion to him. They both exchanged vows and made arrangements to get married right away, and that she would send him word by nine o’clock the next morning to arrange for their marriage.
Romeo then went off to Friar Lawrence and asked him to marry the young couple. The Friar refused at the beginning but reluctantly agreed, for the marriage of a Montague and a Capulet will certainly end the war between these two very different households.
The next morning when Romeo was with his two friends, Mercutio and Benvolio, he received Juliet’s message that was brought by her nurse. He told the nurse about his arrangement with Friar Lawrence and asked her to relay the message to Juliet, but to keep it a secret. When the nurse told Juliet, she rushed to Friar Lawrence’s cell and not long later, Romeo and his love, Juliet was married.
That same day, Romeos friends, Mercutio and Benvolio, were hanging out in the streets Tybalt and some other friends of her approached them. Tybalt, still holding a grudge against Romeo, accused Mercutio of being friends with the hateful and deceitful young Montague. Hearing all the bad words that were spoken about his friend, Mercutio quickly defended Romeo by provoking Tybalt. When Romeo returned from his wedding, he was shocked because he knew that Juliet was fond of Tybalt, and he didn’t want injury upon his wife’s people. He tried to break up the argument peacefully, but when Tybalt called Romeo a villain, Mercutio drew his sword and rushed to his friend’s defense. After a while of fighting, Tybalt stabbed Mercutio, his would was fatal and he ended up dying. Romeo was enraged at the death of his friend; he charged Tybalt with a sword and killed him. Suddenly everyone surrounded the spot where he killed Tybalt and was banished from Verona.
Romeo didn’t want to leave after he was banished because he wanted to be with his love Juliet. He went to Friar Lawrences cell grief- stricken and hid from the police. Friar told him to go to Juliet and flee to Mantua until he published the news of Romeo and Juliets wedding. When darkness came, he met Juliet, but that next morning, he had to leave her to go to Mantua.
Meanwhile, Lord Capulet set up an arrangement for Paris and Juliet to wed. He didnt know about her love for Romeo and that she was already married, so he demanded that she accept her suitor. Juliet was so horrified at what her father had planned for her, but she didn’t tell him about her marriage because Romeo killed Tybalt. She was scared that he would be sought out and killed if her family learned of her marriage with a Montague.
Juliet tried to persuade her father, but her excuses didn’t work for him, so she left to seek out Friar Lawrence for advice. He gave her a small vial of liquid which he told her to drink that night before her wedding to Paris. Consuming this liquid would make her appear dead for forty-two hours. Juliet did what she was told and her nurse found her lifeless body upon her bed the next morning. That day her body was placed in an open tomb for a day or two. Friar Lawrence then sent word to Romeo telling him about his plan so that Romeo would rescue his bride when she awoke and run away together.
These letters unfortunately never reached Romeo because he had heard about Juliet’s death and quickly fled to her tomb. Since the love of his life was now dead, he knew that there was no point in living, so he consumed poison so that he could dye by her side.
Friar came into the tomb when he found out that Romeo never received his letters, went to deliver Juliet himself from the tomb. When he arrived he saw that Romeo was dead and Juliet was just waking up. Juliet saw her dead husband lying on the floor next to her with an empty bottle. She knew what he had done, so she tried kissing his lips so that she could be with him, but failing, she took his dagger and without hesitation, stabbed herself in the breast and died.
When the Capulets and Montagues arrived at the tomb, Friar told them about what had happened. He told them about their romance and secret marriage, whose only sin had been love. His account of their tender and beautiful romance shamed the two families, and over the bodies of their dead children they swore to end the feud of many years.
